It’s based on his experience as caretaker of the last home of Edgar Allan Poe, and imagines what Poe’s last living hours may have been like.
Edgar Allan Poe made his name writing strange, grotesque, and mysterious tales, so it is only fitting that he should have died a strange, grotesque, and mysterious death. On October 3, 1849, he was found completely incoherent in a Baltimore pub called Ryan’s Tavern.
For three days he lay delirious in a hospital (renowned for body snatching) and there he died. To this day, the cause of his death remains a mystery. Mixing authentic recreations of Poe's life and last days with terrifying imagery from his stories, THE DEATH OF POE is a cinematic chronicle of the great writer's final journey into madness and fear.
Poe's obituary was written by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, a literary rival who despised him. Through some sort of subterfuge, Griswold subsequently became his literary executor and then published a biography of Poe in which the defamations of the obituary were expanded and compounded.
